The Mercor Onboarding Experience

On 7th Oct I signed up for Mercor and the sign up was typical - username, password, then fill in address, LinkedIn (optional) and Resume (optional) from which it autofills experience. Then a few more simple questions and you are signed up.

I did a couple of interview and put forward for 3 positions, which are:

  • Builders & Developers: Share Your AI Coding Sessions
  • Expert Senior SWE
  • Senior Software Engineer, Full Stack (Python, Java, Rust, C#, C++)

These positinos pay up to $210/hour which is insanely good. The interview process was very interesting. The AI asks you what your experience is, but then turns the tables, by tailoring questions to that experience exactly. When I got the questions I was like “I did that at work the other day!”, then I realized what was happening - the questions were designed on the fly based on my experience.

Therefore I recommend highlighting recent experience, and what you feel you are confident in and have mastered well, to give you a great chance.

In the coding tests the style of question is “here is some code, talk through it and what is wrong”.

The AI was pretty good, but with AI it can be hard to know when to talk, when to stop talking and so on. I felt under pressure to keep talking as a long pause might signify the end of my answer. So I went into ramble mode! Talking though what my thinkig process is. This is a simlar technique as used in design interviews anyway so that if you can’t answer the question at least they can see how you thought through it.

As of today 14th Oct I am still waiting to see how I do in terms of being accepted for any of the three gigs, so fingers crossed and will let you know.

Overall the onboarding was smooth, and I love the efficient process of applying and tailored interviews.
